Known for his days as both a member of Cloud Nothings and Total Babes, guitarist Joe Boyer has pulled in best friends Jayson Gerycz (Cloud Nothings) and Chris Brown (Total Babes) to create the new amalgamation, Chomp, who are slated to release their 11 song debut LP, Buddah Jabba Momma on September 18th from Exit Stencil Recordings. The new album is far from just a side project as Boyer explains, “I’ve been writing music since I was 12, so Chomp is a necessity for me to be artistically fulfilled, the latest incarnation of what I’ve been doing for the past 15 years.”
With the stunning success of Cloud Nothings’ most recent record, Attack On Memory, released earlier this year, Boyer and crew got together to record Buddah Jabba Momma in his Medina, OH home studio, rescuing some dormant solo tracks that never saw a proper release and bringing years of creative musings to tape. At times Chomp evokes the unrelenting pop-attack of Jay Reatard. At others, the lo-fi energy of No Pocky for Kitty-era Superchunk—with Boyer’s voice even approximating Mac McCaughan—and another legendary Cleveland band, The Mice. However, the sonic pallet on Buddha Jabba Momma expands well beyond pop/punk with varied instrumentation and arrangements that illustrate the contributions Joe Boyer and Jason Gerycz have made to Cloud Nothings ever-evolving and ever impressive sound.
The album title, Buddah Jabba Momma is derived from dashboard objects that have accompanied the band on tours in recent years. Physical reminders of the need for self-improvement, the pull of evil, and the search for love respectively—objects to keep one grounded and focused.
Track 6: “Throw Out Your Wish List” is an amazing interplay of drums and bass playing make this mid-tempo song begin in some beautiful sludge until well-crafted vocals, falsettos, and great guitar work lift the song to a climactic conclusion. One of the more straight up pop songs from the album, “Throw Out Your Wish List” is the story of a man realizing that out of his desperation, he’s delved into something that really doesn’t work with his own personality (and demons).
